The Pied Fantail - pīwakawaka is one of New Zealand’s best known birds, they are frequently spotted in urban areas or following walkers through the bush, catching insect disturbed by foot falls. The adult pied fantail has a greyish head, prominent white eyebrows, brown back and rump, cinnamon breast and belly, white and black bands across the upper breast, and a long black and white distinctive fanned tail. During waking hours the bird is almost never still as it flits from perch to perch, sometimes on the ground but mostly on the twigs of a tree or any other convenient object, looking out for flying insects.
